Pyre also features a local two-player Versus Mode, where you can play against a friend (or CPU opponent) in one of the game's fast-paced ritual showdowns using more than 20 unique characters from the story. From the vibrant hand-painted artwork (in stunning 4K resolution with PS4™ Pro!) to the evocative musical score, every aspect of Pyre's presentation draws you into its fantasy world. Each victory (or defeat!) brings your exiles closer to enlightenment: Whether you prevail or you fail, your journey continues in a branching story with no ‘Game Over’. The writing is what makes the game so memorable.Experience the biggest and most imaginative world yet from the creators of Bastion and Transistor! Pyre is a party-based RPG in which you lead a band of exiles to freedom through ancient competitions spread across a vast, mystical purgatory.Īs you traverse the desolate and beautiful Downside, you'll battle against a colorful cast of adversaries in pitched, high-stakes confrontations. Even if you lose a rite, the story takes that into account and keeps progressing. Without spoiling anything, you can even influence every characters fate, including the enemy factions because there's no game over screen. Party members will remember past conversations, they'll remember if you sided with them or not, and everyone will grow as characters together. Even though the overarching story moves along a predetermined path, you get to do a lot of decision making along the way which have very real impacts. The lore is richly detailed and well realized which makes the characters struggles believable. Theres many twists in here also which reminded me of games such as Final Fantasy X and Metal Gear Solid 2 where the story really subverts your expectations. The writing is really well done and evoked a lot of emotional moments. Cast down into the Downside from the Commonwealth, your only hope at getting back home is to participate in the Rites, a divine set of rituals to determine who is worthy of redemption. The story and writing is arguably the best aspect of Pyre.
